The volcano was formed from the same movments in the earths crust that formed the Great Rift Vally. 25 million years in the past East Africa was a large plain but when the land moved and ruptured because of the African and Eurasian plates rebounding off each other causing large amounts of rifting and weak areas in the crust. Due to these event many volcanoes formed in the vally. Some of these include Mount Kenya, and Meru. The land inside of the vally is slowly sinking into the core and an ocean may form in its place. The area is composed largly of basaltic and andesitic rock/ magma.
